The Adams Memorial Building. This was the first location of the Derry Public Library. In 1905, the honorable R.W. Pillsbury donated $1,000 to the town. The town added $500 to furnish rooms in the Adams Memorial Building. The Reverend William Gaskin was appointed first librarian, but resigned 6 months after he began due to ill health. His daughter, Elsie Gaskin was appointed librarian and held the position for 34 years. Courtesy of the Derry Museum of History

This photograph depicts the rear stacks at the Derry Public Library in its new location in 1927. On the far wall, one can barely make out the MacGregor Coat of Arms on the stained glass window, largely obscured by light. A sign below the window reads "Good Books Build Character." The magazine rack holds McCall's, The Jewish Tribune and Etude among others.

This photograph is of the early Derry Public Library Children's Room, located in the Henry F. MacGregor Building, which was built circa 1927. As can be seen in the photograph, there are tables of varying size, along with signage reading: Only Clean Hands May Touch These Books. Artwork and quotes from lullabyes also decorate the space.

Postcard of Elsie Gaskin, Derry's first female librarian, dated 1911, Derry Public Library. Elsie stepped into the role of librarian when her father, Reverend William Gaskin, had to step down due to ill health. She remained in the position of librarian for 34 years, overseeing large collection growth and the building of a new library during her career. Courtesy of the Derry Museum of History
